This calculator is for mission planning: Inputting the flight altitude and the range will give the line of sight (green) and the lower limit of the Fresnel zone (blue). Overlaying the altitude profile from Google Earth (red) reveals possible conflicts. In the example on the right, you can see the situation in an actual test flight where a nearby hill interrupts the wireless link; range = 40 km, flying height = 1250 m. This shows that even hills of only a few metres height in the vicinity can be a problem.
